Artist Ramesh Rao:

Ramesh Rao was born in Udupi, Karnataka, in 1949. He was born among the family of artists and he was inspired to be an artist by his father Ramakrishna, who was an art teacher, and his brother Bhaskar who is a well-known painter, now settled in Bangalore. Ramesh is an entirely self-taught painter, and has evolved his own individualistic style of painting where real life motifs are his inspirations. His rural and rustic village scenes capture sublime beauty in the simplest and most everyday things, making people take time out to notice and be inspired by the love, peace and happiness in their lives, no matter how harsh and demanding they may seem to be.

Without adding any superficial glamour to his works, Ramesh Rao at the same time is and artist who enjoys expressing himself without any inhibitions. His paintings of ‘Around the City’, ‘Market Yard’, ‘Road Side Canteen’ and ‘Vagrant Thoughts’ capture even the smallest nuance of their lives and express these details with a great emotional force.

A winner of many prestigious awards, Rao has been instrumental in the development of art by founding amongst other groups, the “Artists Forum”, a group of artists and art professionals in Karnataka and the Drishya School of Arts in Udupi, which in 2003 opened a wing in Manipal as well.

This self-taught artist has over 20 one-man and group exhibitions to his credit, including participations in international art events at Paris, Johannesburg, Hong Kong and Bangkok. He has won awards from the State Lalit Kala Academies of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and his paintings, which have been auctioned by prestigious houses like Sotheby’s, are to be found in several major public and private collections in India and abroad.
