P. D. Bhat b

Artist P.D.Bhat came from artistic background of Udupi, Karnataka, South India. Artist Puttur Damodara Bhat, born in 1938. He had his primary education in Nittur high school. He was more interested in art than in his studies. His father was also interested in art. He was good in making Ganapathi idols, stage settings etc. He was very popular and well respected in his area. That encouraged Artist P.D.Bhat to take Art seriously.

Many seniors of Udupi locality observed Artist P.D.Bhat art activities and encouraged him. Though he was not keen on money he was very much concerned about the quality of the art work. He was also involved in idol making with his father. Those days it was not only Ganapathi idol, along with that they used to build idols of Ishwara, basava, Parvathi also. Then he went to Bombay for higher studies in Art. He joined Nutan Kala Mandir, and trained under the guidance of many great Artists.

Art always should be classic. A few strokes do not make an art. It should be appreciated by even the common man. With some strokes and with some hidden meaning which a common man could not understand, some claim it to be great art. This is totally absurd.

 - Artist P.D.Bhat

Artist P.D.Bhat says, "I used to refer Ravi Varma art for making the idols. People appreciated my works. Even the background was similar to Ravi Varma. That time it appeared great, though now it looks silly."
